Kandovan is an ancient village located in the foothills of volcanic mount Sahand, in the East Azerbaijan province, northwest of Iran.

The lava from the Sahand volcanic activities has eroded thousands of years by wind, rain and snow and changed to these forms.

Some specialist believes that the Mongol invasion in 13 century forced and sent people to these stones as their shelter.

Being still inhabited make Kandovan so different from two other volcanic villages in turkey(Cappadocia) and the USA.

Having water plumbing system and electricity show the peaceful coexistence of human and environment in this village. the rocky houses are warm in the winter and cold during theĀ  summer.that’s the reason they don’t use any heater and air condition for the whole year.

In Kandovan village, Honey is the most important product and also its regards as the most important souvenir for visitors. walnut, Almond, medical herbs, grapes molasses and some handicrafts like Gillim, Jajim and special kind of scarfs are the other products of the Kandovan village.
